Studying in New Zealand : Visa Requirements

  • When a student plans to study full-time for more than three months, the applicant needs a student visa. Students can only procure a student visa to study in a course at a university/college, that is registered and accredited by the Qualifications Authority of education New Zealand
  • The student visa is issued for the span whole of the time of the relevant course as long as tuition fees are paid to the institution. Visa application should be lodged at a time preceding the course commencement date by at least two months.
  • Once the student receives admission from the university, they should go for a medical check by one of the clinics certified government of New Zealand, and at the same time, they need to arrange for a Police Clearance Certificate. Along with the complete (and signed) application form, Visa fee, Cover letter, Statement of Purpose, Guarantee of Accommodation, Affidavit of Support from Sponsors, Authorization Letter from Sponsors, Educational Certificates and Mark sheets, IELTS score, Work Experience, Evidence, Funds, and Income. Lodge a student Visa at the High Commission. After lodging visa applications, and as soon as “Approval in Principal” of visa from the New Zealand Government is received, students have to pay the 1st year’s tuition fees. Upon receiving the fee, the High Commission will stamp the visa.

A student visa holder can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time and unlimited during vacations. New Zealand universities/colleges offer a student employment service called ‘Student Job Search’ to help find work. An average amount of 14.25 to 35.28 NZD per hour students can earn during part-time jobs.
